Fungus gnats are a common nuisance in indoor planters, but they can be managed effectively with a few strategic steps. These tiny flies are attracted to moist, organic soil where they lay their eggs. The first and most crucial step is to let the top layer of your soil dry out completely between waterings. This disrupts the gnat life cycle by eliminating the damp environment their larvae need. For adult gnats, insert yellow sticky traps into the soil. The bright color attracts them, and they get stuck upon contact. This immediately reduces the flying population. For a more thorough solution, consider using beneficial nematodes, specifically *Steinernema feltiae*. These microscopic worms are harmless to plants and humans but are deadly predators to gnat larvae. Mix them with water and apply to the soil according to the package instructions. As a preventive measure, always use well-draining potting mix and avoid overwatering. Ensure your planter box has adequate drainage holes. You can also top-dress the soil with a layer of sand or gravel, which creates a dry barrier that deters egg-laying.
