The key lies in creating a system that allows air to reach the root zone and excess water to drain effectively. Start by selecting a planter with adequate drainage holes. If holes are insufficient, carefully drill more along the bottom and lower sides. Next, create a drainage layer at the bottom using materials like perlite, coarse gravel, or broken pottery shards. This layer prevents soil from clogging the holes and creates an air pocket. For the soil, avoid using dense garden soil alone. Instead, opt for a high-quality, well-aerated potting mix. Consider amending it with perlite, coarse sand, or coconut coir to further improve drainage and porosity. When planting, avoid overcrowding; give each plant enough space for air to circulate around the stems and soil surface. Elevate your planter box slightly off the ground using pot feet or bricks. This simple step dramatically improves airflow underneath and allows water to exit freely. For very deep boxes, you can use a technique called "coring." Place a perforated PVC pipe or a bundle of straws vertically in the center during planting. This acts as a chimney, channeling air down into the deeper soil layers. Regular maintenance is also vital.
