Urban gardening brings joy, but birds and squirrels can quickly turn your planter boxes into their personal buffets. Protecting your plants doesn't require harsh methods. Here are effective, humane strategies.
Start with physical barriers. Covering the soil is highly effective. Use a layer of chicken wire or hardware cloth cut to fit the top of your planter. You can plant right through the gaps. For seedlings, create a simple cage by bending the wire into a dome. Bird netting draped over a frame is another excellent option, just ensure the mesh is fine enough to keep squirrels out.
Make the environment less appealing. Squirrels dislike the feeling of certain textures. A generous top-dressing of rough mulch, like cocoa bean shells or coarse wood chips, can deter digging. Birds are often after seeds and insects. Keeping the soil lightly cultivated can disrupt their foraging.
Employ natural repellents. Sprinkle cayenne pepper or a commercial spicy animal repellent around your plants. Reapply after watering or rain. Planting strong-smelling herbs like mint, garlic, or marigolds around the edges can also mask the scent of your vegetables.
