Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Planter Boxes

What's the best way to transport a large urban planter box if I move?

Moving a large urban planter box requires careful planning to avoid damage to the planter, your property, and yourself. The best way is to empty it completely first. Remove all soil and plants, as the combined weight is the biggest challenge. For the plants, temporarily pot them or wrap their root balls in burlap. Once empty, assess the planter's material. Concrete, ceramic, or heavy stone planters are fragile and extremely heavy, while fiberglass or plastic ones are lighter but can still be bulky.

Gather the right tools: a sturdy dolly (furniture dolly or hand truck), moving blankets, strong straps, and packing tape. Use the blankets to wrap the planter thoroughly, providing cushioning and scratch protection. If the planter has drainage holes, you can insert a strong pole or pipe through them (for suitable materials) to create handles for lifting with a partner. Never try to lift a heavy planter alone.

Tilt the wrapped planter slightly and slide the dolly underneath it. Secure the planter to the dolly tightly with moving straps. When moving it, go slowly, minding doorways and steps. For transportation in a truck or van, place the planter against a wall and secure it with straps so it cannot shift or roll during transit. Upon arrival at your new home, reverse the process carefully. This method minimizes risk and ensures your beautiful planter arrives ready for its new urban setting.
