Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Planter Boxes

Do I need to line my wooden urban planter box with plastic?

Whether you need to line your wooden urban planter box with plastic depends on your primary goal: preserving the wood or ensuring optimal plant health. Lining the interior with a plastic sheet, provided you punch drainage holes, can significantly extend the lifespan of the planter by preventing constant moisture contact and slowing rot. This is a practical choice for expensive or decorative boxes. However, for the plants, a strict plastic barrier can create problems. It impedes proper air circulation to the roots and, if drainage holes are insufficient, can lead to waterlogged soil and root rot. A recommended compromise is to use a permeable landscape fabric liner instead. It allows water and air to pass while keeping soil contained. Alternatively, you can forgo lining altogether, accept the shorter lifespan of the wood as part of a natural cycle, and ensure excellent drainage with a coarse gravel layer at the base. Ultimately, if wood preservation is key, use a perforated plastic liner. If plant health is the priority, opt for landscape fabric or no liner with a robust drainage system.
