Wondering if your urban garden is thriving or just surviving? Plants in planter boxes can secretly become root-bound, hindering their health. Here’s how to know for sure.
First, watch for stunted growth. If your plant has stopped getting taller or producing new leaves despite proper light and feeding, it might be out of room below the soil.
Next, check the watering pattern. Does water rush straight through the drainage holes without soaking the soil? This is a classic sign that roots have taken over, leaving little soil to retain moisture. Conversely, if the soil stays soggy for days, a dense root ball might be preventing proper drainage.
Look for physical clues. Gently tilt the planter and peek at the drainage holes. Are roots poking out? Also, observe the soil surface. Roots circling the top or pushing the plant upwards are clear indicators.
For a definitive check, carefully slide the plant out of its box. If you see a tight, coiled mass of roots with little soil visible, your plant is root-bound.
