Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Planter Boxes

Do you have any tips for successfully growing lavender in an urban planter box?

Growing lavender in an urban planter box is absolutely achievable and brings a touch of serene beauty and fragrance to small spaces. The key to success lies in mimicking its preferred Mediterranean conditions. First, choose a deep and wide planter box with excellent drainage holes—lavender despises "wet feet." Use a very well-draining potting mix, ideally one formulated for cacti or succulents, or amend regular potting soil with plenty of perlite or coarse sand. Place your planter in the sunniest spot possible; lavender craves at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure. Prune the plant lightly after its first flowering to encourage bushiness and a compact shape, and do a more substantial prune in early spring. With ample sun, perfect drainage, and a little neglect with the watering can, your urban lavender will thrive.
