For a thriving deep urban planter box, the secret lies in creating distinct soil layers that mimic natural ground conditions. This technique ensures proper drainage, prevents root rot, and provides essential aeration. Start with a base layer of coarse materials like gravel, lava rocks, or broken pottery shards. This critical drainage layer, about 2-3 inches deep, allows excess water to escape freely. Next, add a separator, such as a permeable landscape fabric or a thin layer of straw, to prevent the soil above from washing down and clogging the drainage layer. The following layer should be a mix of coarse sand and organic matter like compost or aged leaves; this transitional layer improves moisture retention and further aids drainage.
