In contrast, plants in the ground typically need less frequent but deeper watering. The earth provides a larger reservoir of moisture and protects roots from extreme temperature swings. Watering once or twice a week, providing about an inch of water each time, encourages roots to grow deep and strong. Always water at the base of the plant in the morning to minimize evaporation and fungal disease.
