Heavy rain can quickly wash away precious soil from your urban planter box, harming your plants. Don't worry! By implementing a few key strategies, you can effectively protect your soil and keep your garden thriving.
First, ensure excellent drainage. While it sounds counterintuitive, good drainage prevents water from pooling on top and creating a muddy slurry that overflows. Drill several holes in the bottom of your planter box if they aren't already there. Then, place a layer of coarse material like pebbles, broken pottery, or landscape fabric at the bottom before adding soil. This layer allows water to escape freely without taking soil with it.
Next, improve your soil's structure. Avoid using fine, sandy soil alone. Create a rich, well-binding mix by combining quality potting soil with compost and coconut coir. These organic materials help bind soil particles together and increase water absorption, making the soil less likely to dislodge. For extra stability, consider adding a top layer of mulch. A two-inch layer of straw, wood chips, or shredded leaves acts as a protective barrier, absorbing the impact of raindrops and slowing down water flow across the surface.
