Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Planter Boxes

My planter box gets full sun all day; what should I plant that won't wilt?

If your planter box soaks up sunlight from morning till evening, you’re in a prime position for growing sun-loving plants—provided you choose varieties that can handle the heat without drooping. The key is selecting species with built-in heat tolerance, deep root systems, or succulent leaves that store moisture. Here are some excellent options that will thrive in all-day sun and resist wilting.

First, consider herbs like rosemary, thyme, and lavender. These Mediterranean natives love direct sunlight and actually prefer drier soil, making them ideal for a hot planter. They release pleasant aromas when brushed and require very little fuss. For colorful flowers, try portulaca (moss rose) or lantana. Portulaca has thick, fleshy leaves that hold water, and its bright blooms close at night but burst open in the heat. Lantana produces clusters of vibrant flowers that attract butterflies and can handle intense sun without showing stress.

If you want edible plants, cherry tomatoes and peppers excel in full sun. Use a deep planter to accommodate their roots, and mulch the top layer of soil to keep moisture even. Succulents such as sedum and echeveria are also stellar choices; they store water in their leaves and look stunning in modern arrangements. For a trailing effect, sweet potato vine or creeping zinnia (sanvitalia) will cascade over the edges while staying fresh in direct light.

Remember a few cultural tips: use a lightweight, well-draining potting mix and water deeply in the early morning so roots have time to absorb before the heat peaks. Avoid overhead watering during midday, as that can scorch leaves. Even the most sun-tolerant plants may droop on the hottest days, but they should recover by evening if properly chosen and cared for. By matching your planter box to these resilient varieties, you can enjoy a lush, wilt-free display all summer long.
