If you are wondering how to tell if the roots of your plants are getting too crowded in the planter box, you are not alone. This is a common concern for indoor and outdoor gardeners alike. When roots become overcrowded, they can strangle themselves and starve the plant of nutrients and water. Here are the most reliable signs to watch for.
First, check the drainage holes at the bottom of your planter box. If you see thick, white or brown roots poking out, that is a strong signal that the roots have run out of space inside. This is often the first visible clue.
Second, observe the surface of the soil. If roots are circling around the top or visibly pushing up above the soil line, the plant is likely root-bound. In severe cases, the root ball may even lift the entire plant slightly out of the soil.
