Female mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water, and even small amounts—like the saucer under a pot—can produce hundreds of larvae. First, eliminate standing water. Check your planter boxes after rain or watering. Empty any trays, saucers, or drip pans within 48 hours. If your boxes have built-in reservoirs, ensure they are completely drained between waterings. For self-watering planters, use the fill tube sparingly and monitor the water level.
Second, improve drainage. Drill extra holes in the bottom of your containers if needed. Elevate pots with pot feet or small stones so water can escape freely. Cover drainage holes with fine mesh or coffee filters to prevent soil loss while allowing water out.

Fifth, maintain cleanliness. Remove fallen leaves and debris from the soil surface, as they can hold moisture and create hidden puddles. Trim overgrown foliage to increase air circulation, which dries the soil faster and makes the environment less attractive to mosquitoes.
Finally, check weekly. A quick five-minute inspection of your planters can catch problems early. Look for wriggling larvae in saucers or soil crevices. If you see any, dump the water or apply Bti immediately.
