In an urban planter box, the constant contact with damp soil accelerates this process. A plastic liner acts as a moisture barrier, protecting the wood. However, simply wrapping the inside in plastic can create a new problem: waterlogging. If water cannot escape, your plant’s roots will drown, and stagnant water can still cause rot from the inside out. The key is to install the liner with drainage in mind. First, line the interior with a heavy-duty, UV-resistant plastic sheet. Then, before adding soil, poke several small drainage holes in the plastic at the bottom of the box, ensuring they align with or are slightly above the planter’s existing drainage holes. This allows excess water to escape. For extra protection, add a 1-2 inch layer of gravel or pebbles at the bottom beneath the soil.
