Mold or mildew on the outside of a wooden planter box is not only unsightly but can also damage the wood over time. Fortunately, cleaning it is straightforward if you take the right approach. Start by removing any plants or soil debris near the surface, then choose a cleaning method based on the severity of the mold.
For light mildew, a simple solution of white vinegar and water (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water) works well. Spray it onto the affected area, let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then scrub gently with a soft-bristled brush. Vinegar is natural, non-toxic to plants, and effective at killing mold spores. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose.
For stubborn mold, use a mild bleach solution: mix 1 part bleach with 4 parts water. Wear gloves and protective eyewear. Apply the solution with a sponge or spray bottle, scrub the moldy patches, and let it sit for no more than 10 minutes before rinsing well. Be careful not to let the bleach soak into the soil inside the planter, as it may harm plant roots.
After cleaning, allow the planter to dry completely in the sun. Sunlight helps kill lingering spores. To prevent future mold, consider sealing the wood with a water-resistant exterior wood sealer, and ensure the planter box has good drainage. Elevate it slightly off the ground to improve air circulation around the bottom. Regularly wiping down the exterior with a dry cloth after watering can also make a big difference.
Always test any cleaning solution on a small, hidden area first to avoid discoloration. With these steps, your wooden planter box will look fresh and remain healthy for your plants.
