URBAN PLANTER BOXES

In a single urban planter box, the best plant pairings share similar needs for sunlight, water, and root space while using different layers of the box. Think of a thriller, filler, and spiller: one upright center plant, one bushy middle plant, and one trailing plant. Good combinations include cherry tomato with basil and marigold; lettuce with radish and chives; strawberry with thyme and pansy; pepper with basil and nasturtium; and lavender with sage and trailing thyme in a dry, sunny box. For a leafy green box, pair loose-leaf lettuce with spinach, a few scallions, and trailing nasturtium. For herbs, combine basil, parsley, and chives, but keep mint in its own pot because it spreads aggressively. If you want flowers, try geraniums with bacopa and sweet alyssum; they like similar moisture and bloom for months. Avoid mixing drought-loving rosemary or lavender with thirsty lettuce or mint. Also avoid pairing tall, aggressive plants with delicate seedlings. Use a box at least 30 cm deep for herbs and greens, and 40–45 cm deep for tomatoes or peppers. Fill it with quality potting mix, add drainage, and water when the top 2–3 cm feels dry. Feed lightly every 2–3 weeks for flowering or fruiting plants. The main rule is to match needs, respect spacing, and choose plants that will not crowd each other out. If you keep each plant’s mature size in mind, one urban planter box can produce herbs, flowers, and even a small harvest all season.
