Many urban planter boxes do come with drainage holes already, but the answer isn't a simple yes for every product. If you are buying a planter designed for outdoor use on a balcony, rooftop, patio, or streetscape, it will usually have one or more pre-drilled holes in the bottom or lower side. These holes let excess water escape after rain or watering, which helps prevent soggy soil, root rot, and fungal problems. Some models also include a removable rubber plug, so you can choose whether to use the hole. Self-watering planter boxes may look like they have no drainage because they use a hidden reservoir; they often have an overflow hole instead. Decorative indoor boxes, liners, and some budget models may arrive without drainage holes.
Always check the product description or inspect the bottom before planting. Look for visible holes, dimples, knockouts, or plugs. If your box has no drainage, you can usually add it yourself. For plastic, use a standard drill bit and make several holes across the bottom. For wood, use a wood bit. For ceramic, terracotta, or metal, use a masonry or metal bit and drill slowly. A 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch hole is generally enough, depending on the box size. Add more holes for larger boxes. Cover holes with a small piece of landscape fabric or mesh to keep potting mix in while letting water out.
If the planter sits on a balcony or deck, raise it slightly with feet or pot risers so water can drain freely and doesn't stain the surface. If it is a self-watering box, do not drill into the reservoir unless the manufacturer says it is safe. In short, urban planter boxes often come with drainage holes, but you should always verify. If they don't, adding proper planter box drainage is one of the simplest ways to keep your container garden healthy.
