URBAN PLANTER BOXES

There isn’t one fixed watering schedule, because an urban planter box dries out at different speeds depending on plant size, soil mix, box size, weather, wind, and how much sun it gets. In most city planter boxes, start by checking the soil every 1–2 days. Push your finger about 1–2 inches into the soil. If it feels dry at that depth, water thoroughly until water runs out of the drainage holes. If it still feels moist, wait another day. As a rough guide, many urban planter boxes need water every 1–2 days in hot summer weather, every 3–5 days in mild spring or fall, and once a week or less in cool winter conditions—but small boxes, thirsty vegetables, and windy balconies can need water twice a day in extreme heat. Large boxes with mature drought-tolerant plants may go a week or more. Urban heat, reflected sunlight from walls, and rooftop wind can make containers dry faster than garden beds, so never rely only on a calendar. Water deeply rather than giving small daily sips, because shallow watering encourages weak roots. Early morning is usually the best time. Add mulch to slow evaporation, make sure the box has drainage holes, and use a moisture meter if you are unsure. If leaves wilt in the afternoon but recover at night, the plant may be heat-stressed rather than ready for more water. If soil stays soggy, reduce watering. The best rule is simple: check the soil, water when the top 1–2 inches are dry, and adjust with the seasons.
