Creating visually appealing arrangements in urban planter boxes requires strategic placement of plants with varying heights. The most effective approach follows the "thriller, filler, spiller" design principle that creates depth and dimension in limited spaces. Start with your thriller plants - these are your tallest specimens that serve as focal points. Position them toward the back or center of your planter box, depending on viewing angles. Good thriller options include ornamental grasses, dwarf shrubs, or tall flowering plants like snapdragons. Next, add medium-height filler plants that form the bulk of your arrangement. These should surround your thriller plants and fill the middle ground. Excellent fillers include begonias, geraniums, or compact herbs like rosemary. Finally, incorporate spiller plants that cascade over the edges of your planter. These trailing varieties soften the container's edges and add movement to your display. Ideal spillers include ivy, sweet potato vine, or trailing lobelia. When arranging, consider each plant's growth habit and mature size to prevent overcrowding. Place taller plants where they won't shade smaller varieties that require full sun.
