URBAN PLANTER BOXES

When setting up an urban planter box, the best drainage layer starts with drainage holes—not a pile of stones. Drill or check for several holes across the base, then cover them with a fine metal or plastic mesh screen to keep potting mix from washing out while letting water escape. If the box is deep, add a 1–2 inch layer of coarse, lightweight material such as gravel, pebbles, pumice, or expanded clay pellets (LECA). This creates an open zone where excess water can collect before it drains away. For balcony or rooftop planters, choose LECA or pumice over heavy gravel to reduce weight. Place a permeable geotextile or landscape-fabric sheet over the drainage layer to stop fine soil particles from clogging the gravel; avoid plastic sheeting or dense fabric that blocks water. On top of that, use a free-draining potting mix amended with perlite, pumice, or bark rather than garden soil. In shallow boxes, skip a thick gravel layer and rely on drainage holes plus a coarse mix so plants have enough root space. Always make sure the planter sits slightly raised so water can exit the holes, and check that overflow is not blocked. Do not use a solid sand layer or sealed bottom as a substitute for drainage holes. For self-watering or reservoir planters, follow the manufacturer’s setup instead of adding a separate gravel layer. The goal is simple: water enters the soil, moves down through a porous mix, passes a screen or geotextile, and exits freely. That combination—drainage holes, hole screening, optional coarse drainage material, and a free-draining mix—is what belongs at the bottom of an urban planter box for reliable drainage and healthier roots.
