Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Planter Boxes

What's a good urban planter box for a north-facing balcony with limited sun?

For a north-facing balcony with limited sun, a good urban planter box should make the most of low light while staying practical in a small space. Look for a lightweight, UV-resistant rectangular trough planter made from powder-coated aluminum, recycled plastic, or a wood-composite material. These materials resist rust, won’t become as heavy as ceramic or concrete, and are easier to move when you need to clean the balcony or rearrange plants. A light gray, white, or pale neutral color is especially useful because it reflects available light and keeps the balcony feeling brighter.

Choose a planter with excellent drainage and a removable saucer or drainage tray. A north-facing balcony dries out more slowly than a sunny one, so you do not want water sitting around the roots. A self-watering planter box can still be a good option, but make sure it has an overflow system and use the reservoir carefully; check the soil before refilling it. Raised feet are also helpful because they improve airflow under the box and prevent moisture damage on the balcony floor. If the balcony is windy or you like to move plants around, casters are a smart feature.

Size matters. A box around 60–90 cm long, 30–35 cm deep, and 30–40 cm tall works well for herbs, leafy greens, ferns, and small flowering shade plants without taking over a compact balcony. Avoid very deep, heavy planters unless you plan to grow larger shrubs. For limited floor space, a securely mounted railing planter can work, but check the weight limit and wind exposure first.

Fill the planter with a lightweight potting mix rather than garden soil, and add perlite for drainage. Good shade-tolerant plants include ferns, hostas, heuchera, impatiens, begonias, coleus, mint, chives, parsley, lettuce, kale, and spinach. Avoid sun-loving plants such as lavender, rosemary, tomatoes, and most succulents. Water less often than you would on a sunny balcony, but check the soil regularly. With a light-colored, well-draining, movable planter and the right shade-tolerant plants, a north-facing urban balcony can still be lush and productive.
