In most urban planter boxes, you can plant directly in them, but whether you should use a liner depends on the box material, drainage, and what you plan to grow. A liner is not automatically required. It is a practical tool for protecting the planter, keeping soil in place, reducing moisture damage, and creating a healthier root environment. The key is to use the right type of liner—or no liner—based on the box. Direct planting works well in concrete, brick, or rot-resistant composite planter boxes that have drainage holes and are made from safe materials. If the box drains freely and holds suitable potting mix, you can usually plant directly. However, wooden boxes benefit from a liner because soil and moisture speed up rot. Metal boxes may need a liner or insulation layer to reduce rust, heat buildup, and contact between soil and metal. For edible plants, avoid liners or coatings that may release harmful chemicals. If you are unsure about the material, use a food-safe liner or a fabric grow bag inside the box. A liner should not trap water. Never seal all drainage holes with a solid plastic sheet unless the box is designed as a self-watering reservoir. For most setups, a geotextile or landscape fabric placed over the drainage holes is enough: it lets water out while keeping soil from washing away. A waterproof membrane can protect wood or metal, but it must be paired with proper drainage and a drainage layer. If the planter is hot, windy, or dries out quickly, a breathable liner or fabric lining can help retain moisture without causing waterlogging. In short, urban planter boxes do not always need liners. You can plant directly if the box drains well, is safe for growing plants, and has enough soil volume for the roots. Use a liner when you need to protect the box, slow corrosion or rot, keep soil from escaping, or improve moisture control. Always prioritize drainage, safe materials, and the needs of your plants over adding a liner by default.
