For one tomato plant, choose an urban planter box that is at least 24 inches deep, 24 inches wide, and 24–36 inches long, with about 20–25 gallons of soil. This gives the roots enough room, helps the soil hold moisture more steadily, and supports a healthy plant without drying out too quickly. If you are growing a compact determinate or bush tomato, you can sometimes use a smaller box around 18 inches deep and 24 inches wide with at least 15 gallons of soil, but the larger size is still a safer choice. Indeterminate or vining tomatoes need the bigger option: at least 24 inches deep, 24–30 inches wide, and 36 inches or more long, plus a sturdy stake or cage. For two tomato plants, use two separate 20-gallon planters or one box at least 48 inches long, 24 inches wide, and 24 inches deep. Avoid crowding so air can move around the plants. Also check that the box has drainage holes, fill it with quality potting mix rather than garden soil, and place it where tomatoes get at least 6–8 hours of sun.
