Use a well-draining potting mix that contains perlite or vermiculite to improve airflow and prevent waterlogging. Avoid overwatering your plants—check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch deep; if it feels damp, wait before adding more water. Regularly remove dead leaves and plant debris from the surface, as decomposing organic matter encourages mold development. For existing mildew, create a natural solution by mixing one part white vinegar with three parts water and spray it on affected areas. Alternatively, a baking soda solution (one tablespoon per gallon of water) can help control fungal growth. Consider placing your planter boxes in locations with good air circulation and some sunlight, as UV rays naturally inhibit mold. If you notice persistent issues, repot your plants with fresh soil and clean your containers with a diluted bleach solution before reuse.
