Are your urban plants looking unhappy despite your regular care? You might be loving them a bit too much with water. Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes in urban gardening, particularly in planter boxes where drainage can be challenging. Here's how to tell if you're overwatering and how to fix it.
The most obvious sign is constantly wet soil. If the soil feels soggy or muddy to the touch days after watering, it's a clear indicator. Visually, look for yellowing leaves, especially on the lower part of the plant. While it's normal for a leaf to yellow now and then, several leaves turning yellow at once often points to overwatering.
Another telltale sign is the presence of mold or algae growth on the soil surface. A white, fuzzy substance or a green film means the environment is too damp. Wilting can be confusing because plants wilt when they're too dry, but they also wilt when their roots are drowning and cannot absorb oxygen. If the soil is wet and the plant is wilting, you have likely found the culprit.
Perhaps the most serious consequence is root rot. If you gently remove the plant from its box and notice the roots are dark brown, black, and feel mushy or slimy instead of firm and white, root rot has set in. A foul, musty smell emanating from the soil is another strong signal of decaying roots.
To prevent overwatering, always check the soil before reaching for the watering can. Insert your finger about two inches deep. If it feels moist, hold off on watering. Ensure your planter boxes have adequate drainage holes and are not clogged. Consider the specific needs of each plant; succulents and herbs like rosemary need much less water than thirsty plants like ferns.
Adjust your watering schedule with the seasons. Plants typically need less water in the cooler, cloudier months. If you suspect overwatering, stop watering immediately, let the soil dry out completely, and in severe cases, repot the plant with fresh, well-draining soil. By paying close attention to these signs, you can ensure your urban garden remains a vibrant oasis.
