The most permanent solution is to physically anchor your plantter boxes. For wooden or plastic planters, you can drill holes through the bottom and use heavy-duty screws or bolts to fasten them directly to a balcony, patio floor, or wall. If drilling into the surface isn't an option, consider using a security cable or a thick chain. Thread the cable through the planter's drainage holes or around its base, and then secure it to a sturdy, immovable object like a railing or a fixed post. Using a high-quality lock is essential for this method.
Another excellent deterrent is weight. The heavier a planter is, the harder it is to steal. You can achieve this by filling the bottom third of the planter with a layer of gravel, sand, or even small rocks before adding your soil. For larger planters, some gardeners even place a concrete block at the bottom. This not only adds significant weight but also can improve drainage.

Finally, you can make your planter uniquely identifiable, which makes it harder to resell and therefore less valuable to a thief. Engrave your name or address on the bottom or side of the planter, or use permanent paint to mark it. While not a physical barrier, this can be a strong psychological deterrent.
