Dealing with excess water in your urban planter boxes can be frustrating, but there's a simple, mess-free solution. The easiest method is to create a proper drainage system. Start by ensuring your planter boxes have adequate drainage holes at the bottom. If they don't, carefully drill several 1/4-inch holes spaced evenly across the base.
For extra protection against soil leakage, place a layer of landscape fabric over the holes before adding soil. Then, create a drainage layer by adding 1-2 inches of gravel or small stones at the bottom of your planter before adding soil. This allows water to collect at the bottom without waterlogging your plants' roots.
When you need to drain excess water after heavy rain or overwatering, simply tilt your planter box slightly over a drainage area. The water will flow out through the drainage holes while the soil and gravel layer remain in place. For larger planters, you can use a baster or siphon to remove standing water from the surface.
This simple drainage system prevents messy soil runoff while keeping your plants healthy and happy in their urban environment.
