For a more integrated solution, consider a drip tray or saucer. Place it directly under your planter to catch all excess water. Be sure to empty it regularly to prevent mosquitoes from breeding and to avoid the planter sitting in its own drained water, which can lead to root rot. For a permanent and invisible solution, apply a waterproof membrane. A sheet of rubber or plastic, like a pond liner, cut to size and placed under your planter box, acts as a superb shield. For wooden decks, applying a fresh coat of waterproof sealant to the area where the planter will sit adds an extra layer of protection. Finally, always ensure your planter boxes have adequate drainage holes. Without them, water becomes trapped, saturating the bottom of the box and dramatically increasing the risk of moisture transfer to your surface.
