It's a common frustration for city gardeners: you carefully plant your seeds, only to find birds have feasted on them. Fortunately, you can protect your future plants with several simple, humane strategies.
One of the most effective methods is to use a physical barrier. Lightweight bird netting, available at most garden centers, can be draped over your planter boxes. Ensure it is secured tightly at the edges to prevent birds from getting underneath. Alternatively, you can create a simple structure with garden hoops or stakes to hold the netting above the soil, allowing your seeds to germinate undisturbed. For smaller planters, a layer of chicken wire or even a window screen placed directly on the soil can be an excellent deterrent.
Visual and auditory scare tactics can also be highly effective. Birds are often startled by reflective and moving objects. Hang old CDs, reflective tape, or specially designed scare tape near your planters. The flashing light and movement will make the area seem unpredictable and unsafe. You can also place a few plastic predatory bird decoys, like owls or hawks, around your garden and move them regularly so birds don't become accustomed to them.
Consider providing a distraction. Setting up a dedicated bird feeder away from your planter boxes can offer birds an easier, more appealing food source. By giving them their own supply of birdseed, they may be less inclined to dig for your newly planted treasures.
Finally, you can adjust your planting habits. Covering seeds with a slightly thicker layer of soil than recommended can hide them from sight. Once seedlings have established their first true leaves, they are generally less appealing to birds, and you can remove any protective measures. With a bit of persistence, you can coexist with urban wildlife while successfully growing your garden.
