Another clever trick is to place a thin layer of sphagnum moss above the drainage layer - it acts as a natural sponge, absorbing excess moisture while keeping soil particles from escaping. When watering your plants, do so slowly and evenly until you see just a small amount of water beginning to drain out. This indicates the soil is adequately moist without being oversaturated. During heavy rains, you might want to temporarily tilt your planter boxes slightly to encourage better runoff.
