Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Planter Boxes

Are there any plants I should absolutely avoid putting in urban planter boxes?

Urban planter boxes bring greenery to balconies, rooftops, and patios, but choosing the wrong plants can lead to major headaches. For a thriving and low-maintenance container garden, here are five types of plants you should absolutely avoid.

First, steer clear of invasive spreaders like mint, bamboo, and some types of ivy. Their aggressive roots and runners will quickly choke out other plants and can even escape through drainage holes, becoming a nuisance.

Second, avoid plants with large, aggressive root systems, such as trees like willows or fast-growing shrubs. Their roots can become pot-bound swiftly, stunt the plant's growth, and may eventually crack or damage the planter box itself.

Third, toxic plants like oleander, foxglove, and castor bean are risky in shared urban spaces. If you have children or pets, or if the planter is in a common area, the risk of accidental ingestion makes these poor choices.

Fourth, thirsty water hogs like traditional lawn grasses or some large-leafed vegetables (e.g., pumpkins) are impractical. They require constant, heavy watering, which is difficult to maintain in the limited soil volume of a planter and wasteful in city settings.

Finally, deep-rooting vegetables such as full-sized carrots, parsnips, or asparagus need more soil depth than most planter boxes provide. They will become stunted and fail to produce a proper harvest, leading to disappointment.

Instead, opt for compact, well-behaved, and shallow-rooting plants like herbs, lettuces, dwarf varieties, and many annual flowers. By avoiding these problematic plants, you ensure your urban garden remains beautiful, manageable, and safe for everyone to enjoy.
