Excessive heat can stress plants, dry out soil rapidly, and harm beneficial microbes. The right planter box can make a significant difference. For cooler soil, prioritize planters made from materials with good thermal insulation properties. Double-walled plastic planters, often made from polypropylene, create an air gap that acts as a buffer against external heat. Ceramic or terracotta pots, while porous, are thick and can keep soil cooler than thin metal containers, especially if they are glazed in a light color to reflect sunlight. Natural wood, such as cedar or redwood, is also an excellent insulator. Raised beds built from wood combine this insulation with improved air circulation. Beyond material choice, consider light-colored planters to reflect heat, using pot feet to elevate the box and allow air to flow underneath, and employing mulch on the soil surface to retain moisture and block heat. For existing planters, simple solutions like adding a shade cloth or positioning them in areas that receive afternoon shade can dramatically lower soil temperature.
