Knowing when to repot plants in your urban planter boxes is key to keeping your green oasis thriving. Here are five clear signs it's time for a bigger home.
First, check for roots growing out of the drainage holes or circling the topsoil. This "root-bound" condition means the plant has outgrown its space. Second, watch for slowed or stunted growth, even during the growing season. Third, if water runs straight through the soil without being absorbed, the root mass may be too dense. Fourth, if roots are visibly pushing the plant up out of the soil. Finally, if plants are severely overcrowded, repotting or dividing them reduces competition for nutrients.
The best time to repot is in early spring before the peak growth period. Choose a new container that is only 1-2 inches larger in diameter. Gently loosen the root ball, use fresh potting mix, and water thoroughly after transplanting. Your plants will thank you with renewed vigor and growth.
