First, the most critical step is managing moisture. After your plants have finished for the season, remove all soil and plant debris. This eliminates the primary source of expanding water. For very large boxes where emptying is impractical, at least ensure the soil is completely dry before the first hard freeze. Always check and clear drainage holes to prevent any blockages that could lead to water pooling.
Next, consider insulation and protection. For wooden planters, applying a fresh coat of sealant or outdoor-rated paint in the fall can protect the wood from moisture penetration. Move lightweight boxes to a sheltered location, like a garage or against a building's wall, to shield them from harsh winds and freeze-thaw cycles.
