As winter approaches, protecting your urban planter boxes from frost is crucial for the survival of your plants. Here are practical tips to winterize them effectively. First, insulate the containers themselves. Wrap the exterior of boxes, especially terracotta or thin plastic pots, with materials like bubble wrap, burlap, or horticultural fleece to buffer roots from freezing temperatures. Next, protect the soil and plant roots. Apply a thick layer of mulch, such as straw, shredded leaves, or wood chips, on top of the soil. This acts as a blanket, regulating soil temperature and moisture. For the plants above ground, use frost cloths or floating row covers on nights when a hard freeze is forecast. Avoid using non-breathable plastic directly on foliage. Watering is also key; ensure the soil is moderately moist before a freeze, as damp soil retains heat better than dry soil.
