Winter weather can be harsh on urban planter boxes, causing unsightly and damaging cracks. The primary culprit is the freeze-thaw cycle, where water seeps into the planter's pores, freezes, expands, and stresses the material. Here are seven effective strategies to protect your containers.
First, understand your planter's material. Terracotta and concrete are porous and most vulnerable. For these, applying a concrete or terracotta sealant in late fall creates a waterproof barrier. For all materials, ensuring excellent drainage is non-negotiable. Clear drainage holes before winter and consider adding a layer of gravel at the base.
Insulation is key. Wrap planters in bubble wrap, horticultural fleece, or burlap. For permanent boxes, building a removable insulated wooden sleeve offers great protection. Elevating planters off cold surfaces with "pot feet" or bricks improves air circulation and prevents bottom freezing.
