Winter's freeze-thaw cycles can be brutal on urban planter boxes, causing materials like concrete, ceramic, and even wood to crack. To protect your containers, a few key steps are essential. First, ensure excellent drainage. Stagnant water trapped in soil expands when frozen, creating immense internal pressure. Before the first hard frost, remove plants and soil completely. For permanent plantings, elevate the planter on pot feet to allow water to escape freely from the drainage holes. Next, clean the empty planter thoroughly to remove salts and debris. For porous materials like concrete and terracotta, applying a sealant can provide a crucial moisture barrier. Insulation is your next defense. Wrap vulnerable planters in bubble wrap, burlap, or specialized horticultural fleece. For an added layer, move smaller pots to a sheltered spot like a garage or against a south-facing wall. If containers must stay planted, mulch the soil surface heavily with straw or leaves to insulate plant roots and reduce soil temperature fluctuations.
