Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Planter Boxes

How can I tell if the roots of my plants are bound in the urban planter boxes?

If your urban plants seem unhappy despite proper care, they might be root bound. Here's how to tell. First, check for stunted or slowed growth, even during the growing season. Notice if water runs straight through the drainage holes without soaking the soil; this means roots have taken over. Gently tip the planter and look for roots circling the surface or poking out the bottom. A final clue is if the plant becomes top-heavy or lifts easily from the pot, indicating a dense root mass. To fix this, carefully remove the plant. If roots are a tight, matted web, it's time to repot. Choose a container one size larger, gently loosen the outer roots, and use fresh potting mix. For larger planter boxes, you can prune up to one-third of the roots and refresh the soil. Regular checks and timely repotting will keep your urban greenery thriving.
