Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Planter Boxes

Can I use regular garden soil in my urban planter boxes?

While it might seem convenient, using regular garden soil in your urban planter boxes is generally not recommended. Garden soil is dense and compacts easily in containers, leading to poor drainage and oxygen starvation for roots. It can also harbor pests, diseases, and weed seeds. For healthy plants, use a high-quality potting mix. These mixes are specifically formulated to be lightweight, well-aerated, and drain efficiently in confined spaces. They often contain ingredients like peat moss, coconut coir, perlite, and vermiculite. If you must use garden soil, amend it significantly by mixing it with plenty of compost and coarse sand or perlite to improve its texture and fertility. Your container plants will thrive with the right foundation.
