As the growing season ends, protecting your urban planter boxes is crucial for their survival and next year's success. Start by removing all spent annual plants and weeds to eliminate pests and diseases. For perennial plants or hardy herbs, research their specific cold tolerance. Many may survive if the roots are insulated. Wrap the planter box itself with materials like burlap, bubble wrap, or specialized horticultural fleece to shield the roots from freezing temperatures and damaging freeze-thaw cycles. This is especially important for terracotta or ceramic pots which can crack. Elevating planters off cold surfaces with pot feet or bricks improves drainage and prevents frost lock. Consider the soil: you can either replace it with fresh mix in spring or, if leaving it, top-dress with compost and mulch. For empty boxes, a final clean with a mild bleach solution will sanitize them.
