To prevent soil from overheating in metal urban planter boxes, selecting the correct liner is crucial for plant health. Metal conducts heat efficiently, which can bake soil and damage roots. The ideal liner serves as a protective barrier. For optimal results, use a reflective, insulating material. Closed-cell foam insulation boards or foil-backed bubble wrap are excellent choices. They reflect sunlight and provide an air gap, significantly reducing heat transfer. Ensure the liner is installed along the interior sides and, importantly, a separate layer should be placed at the bottom for drainage—never completely seal the bottom. Use a permeable landscape fabric over the drainage layer to prevent soil washout while allowing water to escape. Avoid non-breathable plastics as they can trap heat and cause root rot. This combination manages temperature and maintains a healthy root environment for thriving urban gardens.
