Start by placing a shallow, waterproof saucer or tray directly under the pot. For larger boxes, consider a plastic drip tray that matches the planter's footprint. Elevating the planter slightly within the tray using small pot feet or pebbles prevents the soil from sitting in excess water, which can cause root rot. Another key step is creating an internal drainage layer. Before adding soil, fill the bottom one to two inches of the planter with materials like pebbles, clay pellets, or broken pottery shards. This layer acts as a reservoir, allowing excess water to collect away from the roots before it slowly evaporates. For an extra layer of protection, especially in decorative pots without holes, use a plastic nursery pot with drainage as an insert. Simply place it inside your stylish planter, and you can easily remove it for watering and draining over a sink. Finally, be mindful of your watering habits.
