If you're leaving your urban planter boxes empty for the winter, proper winterization is crucial to protect the containers and ensure they're ready for spring planting. First, remove all old plant debris and soil to prevent disease and pests from overwintering. Give the boxes a thorough cleaning with a mild soap solution. For wooden planters, check for rot and apply a protective sealant if needed. Ensure excellent drainage by checking and clearing holes; consider tipping boxes slightly to prevent water accumulation. To shield from freeze-thaw cycles and harsh weather, move containers to a sheltered spot if possible, like against a wall or under an eave. For immovable boxes, wrap them in burlap, bubble wrap, or horticultural fleece, and cover the soil surface with a layer of mulch or a secured tarp. This process prevents cracking, preserves the structure, and gives you a clean slate when the growing season returns.
