That's an excellent question for anyone starting their urban gardening journey! Our urban planter boxes are typically sold separately from the soil mix. We've designed this way to give you maximum flexibility. You can choose the perfect soil blend tailored to the specific plants you wish to grow—whether it's herbs, vegetables, flowers, or succulents, each has unique nutrient and drainage needs.
We highly recommend using a high-quality potting mix, not regular garden soil. A good potting mix is lighter, provides better drainage, and is free from weeds and pests. Look for mixes labeled for "containers" or "raised beds." For most plants, a general-purpose mix works well. For vegetables, consider a blend richer in compost. For succulents and herbs, opt for a mix with extra perlite or sand for sharp drainage.
Filling your planter box is simple. First, ensure it has drainage holes. Add a layer of small stones or broken pottery for extra drainage. Then, fill it with your chosen soil mix, leaving about an inch or two from the top to prevent overflow when watering. Remember, soil settles over time, so you may need to top it off occasionally.
By separating the planter from the soil, we empower you to create the ideal growing environment for your green oasis. Happy planting
