Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Planter Boxes

I have a north-facing balcony; which plants will do best in my urban planter boxes with limited sun?

Having a north-facing balcony doesn't mean you have to give up on your dream of a green oasis. While direct sunlight is limited, many beautiful and resilient plants actually prefer or tolerate shady conditions, making them perfect for your urban planter boxes. The key is selecting varieties that thrive in low-light environments.

For vibrant color, consider shade-loving flowering plants like impatiens, which bloom profusely in shades of pink, red, and white. Begonias, both tuberous and wax varieties, offer gorgeous flowers and interesting foliage. Fuchsias, with their elegant hanging blossoms, add a touch of drama. Don't forget pansies and violas for cooler seasons; they can handle shade well and provide cheerful color.

Foliage plants are the backbone of a shady balcony, adding texture and depth. Hostas are a classic choice, available in many sizes and leaf colors from blue-green to variegated. Ferns, such as the Japanese painted fern or the hardy Boston fern, bring a soft, woodland feel. Heuchera (coral bells) offers stunning purple, silver, or lime-colored leaves. For trailing interest, English ivy or creeping Jenny are excellent choices for the edges of your boxes.

You can even grow some herbs and edibles. Mint, parsley, chives, and cilantro will perform reasonably well with a few hours of gentle morning or indirect light. Leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, and kale are also good candidates for shadier spots.

To ensure success, use high-quality, well-draining potting mix in your planter boxes. Water carefully, as soil in shade may dry slower than in full sun, but container plants still need consistent moisture. A light application of slow-release fertilizer at the start of the season will support healthy growth. With the right plant choices, your north-facing balcony can become a lush, refreshing retreat.
