Move tender perennials or herbs indoors if possible. For hardy plants remaining outside, a thorough cleanup is the first step. Remove all dead annuals and fallen leaves to eliminate habitats for pests and diseases.
Next, focus on insulation. Water the soil deeply before the first hard freeze, as moist soil retains heat better than dry soil. Apply a thick, 3-4 inch layer of mulch, such as straw, shredded bark, or leaves, on top of the soil. This layer acts as a blanket, regulating soil temperature and protecting plant roots. For extra protection, wrap the exterior of the planter box with materials like burlap, bubble wrap, or horticultural fleece. This is especially important for terracotta or ceramic pots prone to cracking.
Drainage is critical. Ensure all drainage holes are clear to prevent water from accumulating and freezing in the bottom of the box, which can expand and crack the container. Elevating planters slightly with pot feet or bricks improves airflow and drainage.
