For wooden planters, the safest route is to use a 100% natural, food-safe oil like raw linseed oil or pure tung oil. These penetrate the wood, offer water resistance, and are completely non-toxic once cured. Avoid boiled linseed oil, which often contains chemical dryers. For adding color, look for mineral-based or clay-based paints specifically labeled for garden use and free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), heavy metals, and fungicides. Acrylic latex paints marked for exterior use are generally considered low-risk for ornamental planters once fully cured, but are not recommended for vegetable boxes. For metal planters, use a powder-coated finish from the manufacturer or a water-based, rust-inhibitive primer and topcoat designed for outdoor metal, ensuring they are low-VOC. Always apply any finish to the exterior of the planter only, avoiding the interior soil-contact areas.
