Wondering if your urban greenery is feeling cramped? It's crucial to spot the signs of overgrown roots early to keep your plants thriving. Here are five clear indicators that it's time for a change.
First, check for roots escaping through the drainage holes. This is one of the most obvious signs. If you see a tangle of roots poking out the bottom, your plant is actively searching for more space and resources.
Next, notice if water drains unusually fast. When roots fill the container, they displace the soil. Water will rush through the pot without being absorbed, leaving the roots dry and the plant dehydrated, even with regular watering.
Another key sign is stunted or slowed growth during the growing season. If your plant isn't producing new leaves or flowers as it should, its roots may be so congested they can't support further development.
Also, be alert for the plant becoming top-heavy or lifting out of the soil. A dense root ball can sometimes push the entire plant upward, making it unstable and prone to tipping over in its current box.
Finally, gently slide the plant out to inspect. If the roots are circling densely around the inside of the pot or forming a tight, solid mat, the plant is severely root-bound. Healthy roots should have room to grow outward.
If you observe these signs, your plant is asking for help. The solution is to carefully repot it into a container that is one to two inches larger in diameter. Gently loosen the root ball before placing it in fresh, well-draining potting mix.
