As the growing season winds down, giving your urban planter boxes a thorough clean is crucial for plant health and container longevity. Start by removing all spent plants and roots. Shake off the old potting mix into a compost bin, as reusing it can harbor diseases. Next, prepare a cleaning solution of one part white vinegar to nine parts water. Scrub the interior and exterior of the empty planter box with a stiff brush and this solution to remove mineral deposits, algae, and pathogens. For tougher residue, a mild soap can be used. Rinse the box thoroughly with clean water and allow it to air-dry completely before storage. If your planter is made of porous material like terra cotta or wood, consider a final wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water) for sterilization, followed by another rinse. Once dry, store your clean planters in a dry, sheltered place like a garage or shed to protect them from winter freeze-thaw cycles that can cause cracking.
