Unlike in-ground gardens, containers have limited soil volume, which can lead to rapid nutrient depletion and moisture imbalance. Overwatering is a constant risk, potentially causing root rot, while underwatering stresses plants quickly in the sun and wind of a balcony or rooftop. Finding the right soil mix that retains moisture yet drains perfectly is an ongoing experiment. Furthermore, the restricted root zone means plants often need more frequent feeding and careful selection of species suited to container life. Balancing these factors to create a self-sustaining mini-ecosystem is the core hurdle of successful urban container gardening.
